FAMILY NAME

Many years ago, Gertrude Stern wrote: "A rose is a rose is a rose." Shakespeare (through Juliet speaking to Romeo) put it more poetically: "A rose by any other name would smell as sweet."

But what about my family name? Schieder. My father casually mentioned - when I was over 40! - what it meant. (more)

DECISION ONE

A friend emailed me about vets she knew who were near despair, near giving up. Was there anything I could say to encourage them not to give up. I came to Decision One - the decision not to give up.

I'm a sucker for stories about almost-dead animals who were rescued by someone who took special care of them, and by their own will to live. I heard over and over: That little kitten wanted to live. Skin and bones, flea covered, a huge sore on her back, something in her did not want to give up.

I can also understand that sometimes, as with the vets my friend was concerned about, that decision is very hard to make. (more)

When I came upon Elsa's work, I had been galvanised to protest by the horrific slaughter of children in the Manchester bombing.

I have always been utterly anti-racist, but because it involved terrorism, my friends thought I had become a bigot.
